Alonso Gil
Exhibition THE ABANDONED (LOS ABANDONADOS) (3 June until 20 July, 2009)

We present Alonso Gil's (Badajoz 1966) exhibition "The Abandoned" (Los Abandonados) for Photoespaña '09. The photographic work shown is the result of the cohabitation of the artist with the Saharan people in the Tindouf refugee camps after participating in the International Art Encounters, in Artifariti in the Western Sahara liberated territories. Gil works with photographic processing, in which liquids are manipulated to achieve various effects on the image such as fading and partial disappearance. His photographs, made with a liquid emulsion of silver bromide are scratched, scraped and stained both randomly and intentionally. They transmit the same feeling of abandonment that runs through the Saharan people, wandering aimlessly in a political limbo. Several audiovisual documents complement the exhibition. Alonso Gil has exhibited both in Spain and in other countries. He has developed interventions in public spaces such as "Guantanamera" (Madrid 2007) and "Celestial Graffiti" (Cordoba 2008). Among his solo exhibitions we find "The Big Cell" (La Celda Grande) held at the Museo Extremeño e Iberoamericano de Arte Contemporáneo, and his latest video installation, "Happiness at Work" (La Felicidad en el Trabajo) 2008.
